Physics is a fundamental science involving a continuing pursuit to understand the physical laws of the universe. Research in physics has historically been a major driver for the development of sensing and measurement technologies. This is because experimental physics is typically primarily concerned with performing measurements. Conversely, an appreciation of physics and various physical laws is a requirement for R&D activities in many sensor technologies and is also useful to professionals interested in applying existing sensor technology. This section includes links to physics related web sites including some links to recent Nobel prizes in physics and space physics. |

PRIZES
2005
2004
2003
2002
The 2001 prize
Institute of Physics (IOP) quote: The 100th Nobel Prize for Physics
been awarded to the researchers who created the first Bose-Einstein
condensates - the so-called fifth state of matter - in the laboratory.
Eric Cornell of JILA and National Institute of Standards and Technology
in Boulder, Colorado, Wolfgang Ketterle of the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, and Carl Wieman of JILA and the University of Colorado, share
the 2001 prize for "the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation
in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies
of the properties of the condensates".
2000
The 1999 prize
was (quote IOP) awarded to Gerardus 't Hooft and Martinus Veltman
for their theoretical contributions to the Standard Model of particle
physics. In the early 1970s 't Hooft and Veltman showed how to
"renormalize" or remove the infinities from the electroweak
theory of Salam and Weinberg, and how to use the theory to make
precise calculations of particle properties. The official citation
reads "for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak
interactions in physics."
1998
Laughlin, Stormer and Tsui for the discovery and explanation of
the fractional quantum Hall effect. To learn more about what this
is also see Introduction to the Quantum Hall Effect
by Y. Qui, Johns Hopkins University.
1997
Chu, Cohen-Tannoudji and Phillips for development of methods to
cool and trap atoms with laser light.
1996
Lee, Osheroff and Richardson for the discovery of superfluidity
in helium-3.
1995
Perl for the discovery of the tau-lepton and Reines for the detection
of the neutrino.
1994
Brockhouse for the development of neutron spectroscopy and Shull
for the development of the neutron diffraction technique.
1993
Hulse and Taylor for the discovery of a new type of pulsar.
1992
Charpak for his invention and development of particle detectors,
in particular the multiwire proportional chamber.
